Most screenshot translators solve a single moment. That is enough for a static image, but it becomes repetitive when subtitles, dashboards, chat panels, remote desktops, or application dialogs keep changing.

What live screen translation changes
The important difference is persistence. A normal screenshot has to be captured again every time the source changes. A live region stays attached to the same visual area, so the workflow fits content that updates in place.
That makes it useful for a video player with foreign subtitles, a support chat docked to one side, a game or application dialog, and status panels in software that is not localized. You still control the region, language, and translation scene.
A practical three-step workflow
- Open TranslateWindow with the command panel and choose live-window translation.
- Drag over the smallest stable region that contains the text you need. A focused region reduces visual noise and avoids translating unrelated interface elements.
- Place the result where it does not cover the source, then continue watching or working while the content changes.
Privacy depends on the model you choose
Screen text is sensitive more often than people expect. TranslateWindow can process translations with a local model so the recognized text stays on the Mac. If you select a cloud provider or use your own API key, the required text is sent to that provider under its privacy terms.
Use local processing for confidential dashboards, customer conversations, and documents. Use a cloud or AI model when its language coverage or writing quality matters more than keeping the request entirely on the device.
When a live translator is the wrong tool
Live OCR cannot recover detail that is not legible on screen. Increase the source size, improve contrast, or capture a smaller region when recognition is unreliable. It is also unnecessary for selectable paragraphs: selection translation is faster and preserves the original text directly.
For long documents, translate passages as you read instead of monitoring a whole page. The best mode is the smallest one that preserves your context.
